Rally Report

SummerBall Rally Mansfield 9 - 12 August 2019

The weather could have been a little kinder to us as we gathered at this new venue – but we didn’t let it dampen our spirits. The pitches were on a lovely field and the hall was a magnificent setting for a ball, with vaulted ceiling and a history that dated back to the 1500s. The site is within easy reach of a supermarket and a regular bus service and access to many food outlets in Mansfield.

On Saturday, Champa held an afternoon tea party with tea, cakes and various ‘stalls’. You might be thinking that this was a big enough challenge – but more was to come. Having collected promises of sponsorship from family, friends and MCC members, Champa faced an even bigger challenge to “Brave the Shave”. Ron Taylor made the initial cut, then Jain Smith took over to ensure the shave was completed professionally. Champa’s husband, Dave Payne, and Anne Taylor commented that when they took a dip in the sea for their Charity challenge New Year 2018, at least they came out of the sea looking the same!

Champa would like to thank everyone who helped over the weekend and all those who have sponsored her. We don’t have the final amount raised as yet as there is still some sponsorship to be paid, but Champa reports that it currently stands in excess of £2,500. If you would like to support her you can still sponsor her on-line at https://bravetheshave.macmillan.org.uk/shavers/champa-payne The total amount raised will be announced at our AGM in October.

Congratulations Champa, it really took some courage to shave off your beautiful locks and we all stand in awe of your determination to raise funds in this way. Many of us know of family and friends whose lives have been affected by cancer and they will appreciate your bravery in supporting MacMillan in this way. Thank you.

The evening ball went well with music by an artiste new to us, Steve Clements. He played a good mix of music and we hope to welcome him back sometime in the future. Well done John for discovering and securing such a lovely venue – we all hope we can return next year.

And last, but by no means least, many thanks to our stewards, Paul & Jane Arndt and Paul & Gill Duly who organised all the other activities we joined in so enthusiastically – even the fiendishly difficult quiz!!
