Rally Report

Smeatons Lakes 27 - 29 September 2019

Despite an atrocious weather forecast 23 intrepid “Motor Caravanners” 22 from East Midlands & 1 from Anglia group turned up for the Smeatons Lakes rally. The rally Marshalls were pleased to see most arrive early after experiencing rain and wind whilst setting up, as most attendees were in place before the next rain appeared. It was surprising that even after all the rain, the ground remained remarkably firm.

Although the meeting room was a brisk walk from where we were parked, everyone wanted to participate in the organised activities. Friday night saw the usual bingo session ably conducted by Dave ……. A few eyebrows were raised when most money was won on just one table and one of the marshals, not to be named, won a line and a house!! Two Pub quizzes which David had down loaded from the web were well received and the night finished with back-round music and plenty of chatting. Saturday morning saw the brave ones travel into Newark for breakfast and lunch at their favourite well known pub and some even did some shopping. All arrived back in time for the pre-arranged afternoon tea and cakes at which members were encouraged to donate in aid of Macmillan. £88 was raised, well done everyone. This was added to Champa’s charity pot which now stands at over £2,600 what a wonderful effort. Cakes were plentiful having been provided by Anne Dunning, Carole……. and Kath…… and participants were invited to return for seconds and even thirds. A Victoria sponge cake made by Kath was auctioned and £5 gained which is included in the £88.

In the evening Malcolm Booth, one of our members, provided music on his key board - it was well received and he was given plenty of applause on completion. During an interval David presided over some more quizzes. Some of the questions provided plenty of laughter for both the questions and the range of answers. It is surprising how intelligent we all are when you think about it!!!

It was decided with Sunday’s predicted bad weather in mind, we would forgo the Sunday morning coffee/tea and biscuits in favour of a quick getaway. During the night the rain was so bad it sounded like frozen peas being dropped on the roof and it went on for hours. In the event, when it was time to leave, the weather was fine and everyone got off their pitch with no problems at all.

All in all, this was a small rally for East Midlands but none the worse for that. Lovely people having a lovely time. Isn’t this what the Motor Caravaners Club is all about?
